Farm News: Farm Worker Killed In Fond du Lac CountycommentsPosted: 06.22.2011 The Fond du Lac Reporter has identified a farm worker killed in a farm machinery accident on Monday. Here's their update. Authorities have released the name of a 49-year-old Campbellsport man who died Monday afternoon after his legs became entangled in an auger inside a silo.
Four employees of the Philip Majerus Dairy Barn, N2759 Hilltop Drive, were cleaning out old feed from the silo. Mark R. Krewald lost his balance and fell feet first into the auger. Another employee was able to shut the auger off, however Krewald’s legs remained entangled in the auger, according to the Sheriff’s Department report.
At 1:53 p.m., Eden First Responders and Campbellsport Ambulance responded to the farm, said Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Mark Strand.
An auger has a rotating blade that pulls feed towards a central blower.
“Farm equipment is pretty dangerous,” Strand said. “… These accidents happen statewide all the time. It’s something you need to be extra careful with. Things can happen pretty fast. You don’t have to tell people on the farms that. It’s probably one of the most dangerous occupations.”
Strand said augers usually do not have safety shut-offs. If a piece of clothing or body part gets hooked, the machine will usually pull the person in, he added.
Krewald was conscious at the time of the initial call. However, at about 2:30 p.m. when the Flight for Life helicopter landed in a nearby field, Krewald was still trapped, according to a police scanner report.
Krewald was removed from the auger at 2:34 p.m. and later died due to the traumatic injuries, according to the release.
Two detectives were sent to the farm to investigate since the accident resulted in a death, said Strand.
Firefighters used Jaws of Life to extricate Krewald, according to the scanner.
Strand said rescue workers toiled in tight quarters, with only a few feet of room to attempt a rescue.
