Farm News: United Soybean Board Heads To Wisconsin

The United Soybean Board of Directors comes to Milwaukee next Thursday-Friday for the annual summer meeting.  The group of 69 farmer-leaders guide USB on where to channel soybean check-off dollars.

Wisconsin will be represented by Nancy Kavazanjian - grower from Beaver Dam, and Bob Derr - grower from Sun Prairie, on the board, and Bob Karls, executive director of the Wisconsin Soybean Program will also be involved in the meeting.

While in Milwaukee, the board will also be deciding direction on its 2012 fiscal year plans, with specific program areas and evaluating recommendations for their plan of action in each area.  That means the farmer leaders will look at everything from communication to domestic marketing, plus new uses - product development and international outreach.

The United Soybean Board has been concentrating a lot of their emphasis on supporting animal agriculture this year.  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, soybeans processed into components like soybean oil and protein-rich soybean meal are used primarily as ingredients in feed for poultry, livestock and fish.  Soybean oil is used as a healthy vegetable oil in food applications as well as renewable soy biodiesel.

Farm Director, Pam Jahnke, will be joining the USB group in Milwaukee - including a special reception at the historic Milwaukee Grain Exchange.
