Farm News: Could Snails Threaten Project

Posted: 06.23.2011

State wildlife officials are seeking public comments on whether to allow a transmission project in western Wisconsin that could kill threatened snails.

American Transmission Company is conducting maintenance on a line in Crawford County. Department of Natural Resources experts have determined two threatened snail species, the wing snaggletooth and cherrystone drop, live in the area and the project could result
in some inadvertent deaths.

The DNR says the company has agreed to undertake conservation measures that would minimize the impact on the snails. The agency goes on to say the project shouldn't endanger either snail population as a whole and would provide a public benefit.

The agency will take comments through mid-July.
