Farm News: More Letters Requesting Informational Hearings

There's another state representative that wants Wisconsin to take a closer look at how we're going to keep agribusiness supplied with qualifed employees in the future.

State Representative Louis J. Molepske, Jr. sent letters last week to the chairs of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Assembly Committee on Education, requesting an informational hearing to discuss how Wisconsin can prepare students and young people to meet the skilled labor needs of tomorrow’s agricultural communities.

“Agriculture has long been a mainstay of Wisconsin’s community development, economic prosperity and, indeed, identity. As a result, agricultural education is essential to the future of Wisconsin’s agricultural communities and enterprises.

“Particularly as other states and nations begin to equip a greater fraction of their young people with occupationally relevant skills and training, we must not pass up an opportunity to be proactive in developing the skilled workforce that is required for this industry.

“I have requested that Chairman Nerison and Chairman Kestell devote their respective committees’ attention to this important issue. By bringing together business leaders, agricultural leaders, and education policy experts for an informational hearing, we can position Wisconsin’s young people to achieve in an ever more demanding labor market, as well as preserve the place of agriculture in Wisconsin’s future.”

Rep. Molepske’s request follows similar requests over the last month from Rep. Mark Radcliffe (D-Black River Falls) and the Wisconsin FFA Association. These requests come on the heels of a 2011 Pathways to Prosperity Project report on the nation’s educational system, prepared by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, which states that exploring multiple pathways for young people to gain education and work experiences is an important part of preparing for the future.
