The Wisconsin Master Farmers convened in Watertown for their annual reunion where Tom and Barbara Lyon, Cambridge, were inducted as new members.

An Iowa native, he has been active in government, university, cooperatives, the dairy industry and many community organizations. Most recently, Lyon has served as consultant to the Secretary, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and co-chaired Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Future of Farming and Rural Life study. He is the former CEO of Cooperative Resources International of Shawano. He also served as president of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents and participated in many other university and Extension activities.

His wife, Barbara, is very active in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish and her book club. They enjoy spending time in Door County and traveling internationally. They have three children and four grandchildren. Upon receiving the award, he humbly noted, “There is nothing I enjoy more than visiting with good, solid farm folks. Thanks to all of you here who helped us along the way.”

Their sponsors for membership were George and Shirley Barlass of Janesville and David Dickson, deceased, formerly of Madison. Kathy Wendt of Waukesha was chair of the membership committee.

More than 80 Master Farmers gathered in Watertown for the annual meeting and toured the Horicon Marsh, Rosy-Lane Holsteins and Berres Brothers Coffee. The Watertown Players created an old time radio show and debuted it for the group Tuesday evening.

George Barlass, outgoing president, handed over his duties to Deane Thomas, Cobb. First vice president is Phil Peterson of Oregon and second vice president is John Kauffman of Exeland. Virginia Larson of Evansville was appointed to the membership committee.

The group held a memorial service and the funds collected  will benefit Wisconsin residents who were victims of the recent tornados.

The Wisconsin Masters Farmers Association is a group of people who till the soil and take pride in that undertaking. In raising families as respected members of the community, members have learned to live with the differing moods of nature and to love it in all forms. The 2012 Reunion will be near Tomah and Jim Wells, Sparta, is the chair for the event.  David Fellows of Evansville was chair of the planning committee for the 2011 event in Watertown.
