Farm News: Adams County Dairy Hears Heat

It may be hot outside - but it was also a little hot inside on Monday when approximately 300 people voice their concerns over a proposed 4,300 cow dairy outside of Coloma.

The
Wausau Dairy Herald reports that many in the audience are concerned over manure from the facility seeping into ground water - that for some central Wisconsin communities - is already a shrinking resource.

The 4,300 dairy has already broken ground in Grand Marsh.  Milk Source Holdings, LLC, made up of partners Jim Ostrom, John Vosters and Todd Willer welcomed county officials to the site at the end of June for the official ceremony.

Ostrom said the dairy is facing a paperwork process involving more than a dozen permits and approvals. He Ostrom also said, “We pledge to continue to show our commitment to our cows, the community and the environment, just as we have since we turned our initial permit application and as we have done at all of our farms.”

New Chester Dairy will eventually be home to 4,300 dairy cows and about 400 steers. The cost to construct will be about $35 million and the dairy will employ about 40 people and offer health benefits, a matching 401K plan and paid vacation.
