About 2,500 food safety officials from around the world will meet in Milwaukee to discuss the E. coli outbreak in Europe that killed at least 50 people and sickened thousands.

The International Association for Food Protection is meeting from Sunday through Wednesday. Authorities from Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland and the
United States will also participate in sessions on detecting viruses, fruit and vegetable safety, the control of airborne illnesses and safety issues that affect beer production.

The International Association for Food Protection was started in Milwaukee 100 years ago as the International Association of Dairy and Milk Inspectors. Over the years its focus has expanded to include all aspects of food protection.

The city's tourism promoter, VISIT Milwaukee, estimates the economic impact of the gathering at $2.2 million.
