Wisconsin is full of wonderful people, with good intentions - helping animals. But for those groups that strive to help abandoned and abused farm animals - things are tough.
Dana Barre, operator of Heartland Farm Sanctuary - serving Dane county, says they need an upcoming fund raiser to bring in around $20,000 or she doesn't know what they'll do with nearly 40 farm animals they're currently caring for. Barre says they're working on a donated farmette that's currently housing everything from chickens to pigs - all given up by their owners in one way or another.
Not having a farming background, Barre admits that operating the facility has been a steep learning experience! "Every animal is different," she tells the Wisconsin Farm Report. "They've got special feed needs, special ways to keep them cool in this heat - special personalities." Barre only began accepting animals within the past year - but with the downturn in the overall economy, she admits she couldn't have chosen a worse time to begin a non-profit.
Barre says the sanctuary really can't accept any more animals at this time until they find out if the community is going to support their upcoming fund raiser on August 20th. The event, a dinner and auction called "That's A-moo-re" will be at the West Side Club in Madison from 5:30-9 P.M. Cost of tickets is $50, including a full meal. An auction will help supporters give additionally. Find out more on line at www.heartlandfarmsanctuary.org.
