Farm News: Butts To Be Inducted In Pork Hall Of FamecommentsPosted: 08.02.2011
Alan Butts will be inducted into the Wisconsin State Fair Hall of Fame during the Open Duroc Show in the Swine Barn at the Wisconsin State Fair, in West Allis, on August 6. The show begins at 5 p.m. Each year, Wisconsin Pork Association recognizes an outstanding individual who has demonstrated a long time commitment to the Wisconsin State Fair in the open or junior shows, and to developing a quality breeding program.
Alan lives in Evansville, WI where he ran 450 acres and 300 sows in a farrow to finish operation with his father Allison and brother Arlen. Since 2000, Alan has run about 40 sows, for breeding stock and show pigs, with his son Jayson. Alan started raising pigs in 1958 with one bred sow purchased from Russel Huber of Poynette, WI . He has sold hogs to buyers from 28 states, as well as buyers from Japan, China, Taiwan, Mexico and South America. Alan has hosted visitors from Japan, Taiwan and Mexico to the farm. He has also showed hogs in 19 states in the U.S.
Butts has shown or had entries at the Wisconsin State Fair since 1958, missing only about 3 years. He has had many champion boars and gilts in the Duroc breed. Alan has earned Premier Sire and Premier Breeder awards at the Wisconsin State Fair. In 1992 he had the Premier Barrow exhibitor, and in 1994 the Reserve Champion Barrow overall in the junior show. He also had champion barrows in the Governor's Blue Ribbon sale and multiple champion barrows at the Wisconsin State Fair.
In addition, Butts had Hog College Boar three times in 1973, 1984 and 1990. His Reserve Champion Boar at the 1973 National Barrow Show (NBS) was sold to Japan for $25,000. He has had four Duroc National Premier Sires in the years of 1980,1983,1987, and 1988. In 2006 he exhibited the champion Duroc and Hampshire boars at the National Barrow Show an accomplishment that has never been done in over 60 plus years of the NBS. Alan has also judged hog shows in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. He has also had the joy of judging many county fairs and enjoys working with the children.
Alan's family includes his four children Todd, Chad, Jayson and Kelli and four grandchildren Natalie, Tyler, Kaden and Emersen. His special friend, Rita Stone and her four children: Jessica Grover, Elliot, Samantha and Jordan Stone.
