Farm News: Property Tax Evaluation In WI

Posted: 08.03.2011

A new study finds that property taxes levied by local government increased this year 2.6 percent.

The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance study released Tuesday says that is the smallest increase since 2006.

School property taxes were the largest chunk of what was levied, accounting for more than 45 percent on average. Their share was up 3.4 percent. Property taxes levied by cities, villages and towns rose 2.1 percent, county property taxes went up 1.9 percent and
technical college taxes rose 2 percent. Changes made in the recently passed budget will limit future property tax growth.

The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau expects net property taxes to rise less than 2 percent in each of the next two years.
