Farm News: Oak Wilt Alert

comments

Posted: 08.05.2011

Wisconsin forestry officials are warning tree lovers to keep an eye out for oak wilt.

The tree-killing fungal disease affects trees in both the red oak and white oak groups. Symptoms include wilted leaves and leaves on the ground.

The fungus moves from tree to tree on insects and through tree-to-tree root grafts.  Experts recommend people prune their trees with caution until October to avoid wounding them and leaving them vulnerable to insect-borne infection. People also can install
barriers to prevent root grafts.

People who want to remove a diseased tree should make sure they sever grafts with other trees first.
