Farm News: Stock Dog Trials Back In MerrimaccommentsPosted: 08.09.2011
The Wisconsin Working Stock Dog Association will hold their 26th Annual Sheep Dog Trial on September 2-5, 2011. The trial will take place at the McLeish Farm, N5085 Hwy 78 in Portage, Wisconsin. The farm is 3 miles south of Petro towards Merrimac (Exit 108A off I 90/94 from Madison).
The Labor Day weekend trial will include classes for all levels of sheepdog working ability. With only whistle and voice commands, these amazing border collies can gather sheep from over 500 yards away. Stock dog trials are designed to simulate the control of livestock as it occurs on the ranch or farm.
Spectators will see a wide range of work from the energetic purposeful outrun and authoritative gather of the sheep at the top of the field to the drama and finesse of the pen and shed where the slightest movement can be critical. An announcer will be on hand to explain the trial course and the actions of the dogs and handlers and sheep throughout the weekend. While the trial competition is a culmination of many years of training and hard work and is a showcase for the wonderful working abilities, most of these dogs work regularly on the farm and are regarded as valuable members of the family.
This is an excellent opportunity for the public to see highly trained Border Collie dogs at work. It is especially an opportunity for shepherds to come and observe these working dogs, and learn what a dog can do for them on their farm. Just as a carpenter needs a saw, a shepherd needs a border collie - (collie means a useful tool), to help with everyday chores on the farm. The benefits of having a working companion can make chores much easier and gratifying.
The WWSDA Trial attracts handlers and dogs from all areas of the country and Canada; some of the best handlers and dogs have traditionally competed at the Labor Day Trial and many will be making a return visit this year. The handlers much appreciate the fact that they can compete under the watchful eye of a judge from the United Kingdom, where sheepdog trialing is a way of life for many shepherds.
The judge for the Trial is Stuart Walton, a highly respected shepherd and sheepdog handler from England. This is Stuarts second time to judge this Trial.
A $5 entrance fee is charged for adults and $3 for children 16 and under. A souvenir booklet is available for purchase which explains the competition course and lists all the competitors. For more information and directions to the venue see: www.wwsda.org
