Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources is encouraging men and women who are passionate about the outdoors and the environment to apply to be a state conservation warden.

The department expects to hire about 12 new conservation wardens to fill existing vacancies in the force of 206 officers with training beginning in March. DNR officials say that many wardens are close to retirement and that there are about 45 wardens who will reach retirement age by the end of 2012.

To be eligible to be a DNR warden, applicants must be 21 or older, have 120 college credits or 60 credits and two years as a certified law enforcement officer.

Applications are being accepted through Sept. 2.
