Farm News: Did Asian Carp Get Into WI?

Posted: 08.12.2011

Authorities have found evidence that invasive Asian carp are in the St. Croix River as far
upstream as the dam at St. Croix Falls, Wis.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials told reporters Thursday that sensitive DNA testing turned up evidence of the carp in many places along the Lower St. Croix on the border with Wisconsin.

The DNR says it will contract with commercial anglers to net the area and use electric shocking technology to try to capture live Asian carp. Officials also plan to install a special barrier at the mouth of the St. Croix River at Prescott, Wis., to temporarily stop the
spread of the fish.

Testing on the Mississippi River from the Ford Dam south to the Minnesota River between Minneapolis and St. Paul found no carp DNA.
