Farm News: Apple Crop Starts Rolling In

Wisconsin's apple growers may have gotten off to a cool start this spring - but they're making up for their patience with volume!

The latest figures from the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service show a large increase in this years expected crop.  Statewide, growers are expecting to harvest somewhere around 43.2 million pounds of apples - that figure is up more then 16 percent compared to last year.

The Wisconsin Apple Growers Association says this week several orchards in the southern growing region are opening their gates for early varieties like Zestar and Paulared.

Not everything went smooth, however.  Some growers experienced hail storms and severe weather earlier this summer that actually damaged some of their fruit.
