Farm News: Barrette Tackles Aquatic Invasive Species Issue

The Southwest Badger Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council launched a new project known as the Southwest Wisconsin Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Initiative in the nine counties it serves.

To achieve the project’s goals and objectives, Don Barrette, Mineral Point, Wis., was named the Southwest Badger AIS coordinator.  Barrette will be responsible for early AIS sampling, and outreach and education in Crawford, Grant, Green, Iowa, LaCrosse, Lafayette, Richland, Sauk and Vernon counties.

Barrette grew up fishing, exploring the outdoors and developing his interest in the natural sciences in his native Mineral Point. He earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology in 2005 and his master’s degree in zoology in 2008, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining Southwest Badger RC&D, Barrette was a fish technician and a fish health specialist/microbiologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

“These experiences have provided Don with the knowledge, insights and opportunities to build relationships which will serve him well in his new role,” said Lance McNaughton, president of the RC&D Council and a representative from Lafayette County.

AIS aims to improve public awareness of the threats associated with the spread of invasive species in southwest Wisconsin bodies of water. Because very little information is available on the distribution of aquatic invasives, AIS will inventory and monitor 13 public access lakes and 44 rivers to identify infestations and control spread, as well as provide much needed education and outreach about areas that need protection and rehabilitation.

For more information or to schedule a meeting with Barrette, contact him at don.barrette@swbadger.org or by calling the Southwest Badger RC&D office in Platteville at (608) 348-7110.
