Farm News: US Mushroom Sales top $1 Billion in Value!

Sales volume for the 2010-2011 U.S. mushroom crop totaled 862 million pounds, up 9 percent from the 2009-2010 season. Value of sales for the 2010-2011 U.S. mushroom crop was $1 billion, up 8 percent from the previous season. The number of growers, at 282, was down 35 growers from last season. The average price received by growers was $1.16 per pound, down 1 cent from a year ago.

Value of sales for U.S. Agaricus mushrooms totaled $952 million, up 8 percent from the 2009-2010 season. The average price received by growers was $1.13 per pound, down 1 cent from the previous season. Producers sold 845 million pounds of Agaricus mushrooms, with 86 percent sold for fresh market.

Growers in the Central region (Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin) sold 80.7 million pounds of Agaricus mushrooms, up 4 percent from the 2009-2010 season. The regional price averaged $1.74 per pound, once again the high-est in the country. Value of sales for the Central region was $140 million, a 5 percent increase from the previous season.

Value of sales for Shiitake, Oyster, and other specialty mush-rooms in the U.S. totaled $50.1 million, up 27 percent from the 2009-2010 season. The average price received by growers was $2.97 per pound, up 41 cents from the previous season. Produc-ers sold 6.42 million pounds of Shiitake mushrooms, a 3,000 pound increase from last season. Oyster mushroom sales volume increased 33 percent, to 7.74 million pounds.
