Farm News: North Central State Farmers GathercommentsPosted: 09.06.2011
People who operate small farms - and those who would like to - are invited to attend the North Central Wisconsin Small Farms Conference on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Palmquist Farm in Brantwood.
Small farms are the fastest growing segment of the agricultural economy in northern Wisconsin. This conference will help small farmers learn more about production practices, business management considerations, and marketing options.
Paul Dietmann, Director of the Wisconsin Farm Center at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection will deliver the keynote address: “Bigger isn’t necessarily better; only better is better.”
Other speakers include University of Wisconsin-Extension farm legal specialist Phil Harris who will discuss farm business arrangements, tax, and labor issues; UW-Extension beef specialist Amy Radunz; UW-Extension small ruminant specialist Claire Mikolayunas; and UW-Extension poultry specialist, Ron Kean. The program also includes a panel discussion featuring farmers from the region who are using novel direct marketing techniques that can be effective for small farms. Following the conference, participants are invited to tour the Palmquist Farm (optional).
The conference runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes lunch and program materials.
Early bird registration fees for the conference (received by Sept. 8) are $15 per person. Registrations received after that date are $25 per person.
