Even before Wisconsin farmers faced the frost event they did on Thursday morning – the corn crop specifically seemed to be shrinking.

The Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service said based on conditions as of September 1, Wisconsin’s corn yield is forecast at 157 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last month. Total production is expected to be 515 million bushels, up 2.5 percent from 2010. If realized, production would be a record high, although yield would be second to last year’s record. As of August 29, corn was rated 76 percent good-excellent by Wisconsin Crop Progress reporters, a 5-point decrease from last month. The crop is maturing in line with the 5-year average.

Wisconsin’s September 1 forecast for soybeans is 45.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month and 5.5 bushels lower than 2010. Production is expected to reach 74.3 million bushels, 10 percent below last year’s record. As of August 29, 78 percent of Wisconsin soybeans were rated good-excellent, a 3-point decrease from last month.
