Farm News: Farmers Nervously Optimistic On Crops

That early frost a week ago ended the growing season for some state farmers - others remain cautiously optimistic that they can squeeze a few more days out of Wisconsin's weather.

The latest update from the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service showed that 47 percent of the corn grower felt their crop was still in good shape - with 27 percent convinced it's still excellent.  Soybeans probably suffered more likely damage over the cool weather - but Wisconsin farmers still believe.  As of Sunday, growers rated their soybeans as good 49 percent of the time and 26 percent of the beans called excellent.

Statewide corn was maturing slowly.  98 percent was still in the dough stage, 80 percent was dented and just 25 percent considered mature.  Statistically - you have to go back to 2006 to find a growing season that's similar to what Wisconsin's dealing with now.

38 percent of the corn silage harvest had already been completed as of Sunday.

Soybeans that were planted late were the hardest hit by the early frost according to reporters.  70 percent of the beans were turning colors and showing some maturity - but just 24 percent were advanced enough to drop their leaves.

You may also be noticing an increase in fall produce like winter squash and pumpkins showing up at roadside stands.  Those crops look great this year too!
