Farm News: Remember Safety at Harvest Time

As you’re thinking about getting out in the field for harvest, it’s also time to start thinking about safety. Not only with the equipment in the fields, but also with the safety around grain bins.

Grain bin fatalities hit an all-time high in 2010, setting off several safety campaigns, boosting enrollment in rescue training programs and prompting agribusinesses to donate rescue tubes to cash-strapped volunteer fire departments.

The large number of deaths from grain engulfment got attributed to 2009’s large, wet crop that went into the bin in poor condition.

According to Department of Labor statistics, 312 people died in crop production work in 2010. Add in livestock fatalities and deaths from forestry, fishing and hunting, which the Department of Labor includes in its agriculture category, and the business of food production has the highest risk rate of fatal injury.

When you’re working in grain bins,  it’s always best to keep these things in mind:

Always have someone outside the bin in case of an accident.
Lock out and tag the auger to make sure it won’t accidentally turn on. You can buy lock out/tag kids at any hardware store or farm equipment supplier.
And if you’re going in the bin, wear a safety harness.

OSHA has a complete list of grain bin safety guidelines – you can find them by clicking here website
