Farm News: WI Spuds - A Little Higher PricecommentsPosted: 10.05.2011
Wisconsin’s potato farmers produced nearly 24.3 million hundredweight
(cwt.) of potatoes on 61,500 acres in 2010. What happened to all of those potatoes?
Ninety-two percent were sold for use as fresh, processed, or seed potatoes. The other 8 percent were used on the farms where they were grown, or lost after reaching storage.
The value of the Wisconsin’s 2010 potato crop was $238 million, with an average price of $10.60 per cwt. The average price was up $1.75 per cwt. from the 2009 marketing year average.
The price farmers received for fresh market potatoes was up $4.75 from what they received a year earlier. In 2010, they received an average of $11.70 per cwt. The average price received for processed potatoes went down slightly to $9.20 per
cwt.
The U.S. average price for potatoes during the 2010 marketing year was $9.20 per cwt., up 95 cents from the previous year. The national increase in price for fresh market potatoes was the main contributing factor to the upswing in the average price
received.
The first production forecast for the 2011 crop will be released November 9, 2011.
