If the latest projections are correct from the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service - Wisconsin's got some of the best crops in the country.

Based on conditions as of October 1, Wisconsin’s corn yield is forecast at 160 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last month. Total production is expected to be 525 million bushels, up 4.5 percent from 2010. If realized, production would be a record high, although yield would be second to last year’s record. Wisconsin’s corn objective yield survey showed there was an average of 28,650 ears per acre this year, 100 more than last year. This is a record high ear count for Wisconsin. As of October 2, corn was rated 74 percent good-excellent by Wisconsin Crop Progress reporters. Fifty-seven percent of the crop was mature, in line with the 5-year average.

Harvest was just beginning, with 5 percent of corn acres harvested for grain.

Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin are showing record high ears per acre counts. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 148.1 bushels per acre, unchanged from the September forecast and 4.7 bushels below last year. If realized, this will be the lowest average yield in the United States since 2005. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 83.9 million acres, down 1percent from the September forecast. Acreage updates were made in several states based on administrative data.

Wisconsin’s October 1 forecast for soybeans is 45.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month and 5.5 bushels lower than 2010. Production is expected to be 72.0 million bushels, 13 percent below last year’s record. Wisconsin’s soybean acres were lowered this month based on administrative data. Acres to be harvested for soybeans are estimated at 1.60 million acres.

As of October 2, 74 percent of Wisconsin soybeans were rated in good-excellent condition. Soybeans dropping leaves were slightly behind the 5-year average, and harvest had not yet begun in the state at that time.

Wisconsin’s alfalfa hay harvest is expected to be 3.11 million tons, 18 percent below last year. Yield is forecast at 2.70 tons per acre, 0.2 ton lower than last year. Acres harvested are expected to be 1.15 million, 150,000 fewer than last year. U.S. alfalfa production is forecast at 64.7 million tons, 5 percent below 2010.
