University of Wisconsin System officials are surprised to learn they have to make additional budget cuts.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports an email shows the UW System needs to make one-time budget cuts totaling $65.7 million over the next two years. That's on top of a
base budget cut of $250 million.

According to an email circulated by UW Colleges and Extension Chancellor Ray Cross, the total cuts __ known as a lapse __ to all state agencies over the next two years is $174.3 million.

UW System spokesman David Giroux says the UW System will need to cut $46.1 million this year and $19.6 million next year.
