Farm News: WI Gets Biofuel Support From USDAcommentsPosted: 11.01.2011
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced payments for 156 advanced biofuel producers across the country - and Wisconsin leads the nation in projects funded.
"This funding will help local producers increase the production and availability of renewable energy and thus help our nation begin to reduce its reliance on foreign oil,” Vilsack said. “Just as importantly, USDA’s support will help to further develop the nation’s growing biofuels industry and generate green jobs and economic growth.”
The funding is being provided through USDA’s Bioenergy Program for Advanced Biofuels. Under this program, payments are made to eligible producers to support and ensure an expanding production of advanced biofuels. Payments are based on the amount of biofuels a recipient produces from renewable biomass, other than corn kernel starch. Eligible examples include biofuels derived from cellulose; crop residue; animal, food and yard waste material; biogas (landfill and sewage waste treatment gas); vegetable oil, and animal fat. Through this and other programs, USDA is working to support the research, investment and infrastructure necessary to build a biofuels industry that creates jobs and conserves natural resources across America.
Wisconsin leads the nation in number of projects announced, with 18. The projects vary from anaerobic digesters to wood pellet production and biodiesel trans esterification.
For example, in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, Marth Peshtigo Pellet Company, LLC received a $36,651 payment. This wood pellet mill produces approximately 30,000 tons of pellets per year using wood shavings, sawdust and other clean waste wood from mills and manufacturers throughout the region. The pellets are used for residential heating. Marth pellets produce an average of 8000 BTU’s per pound. The operation is expected to save nine jobs.
In Clyman, Wisconsin, Badger Biodiesel, Inc. received a $115,833 payment. This biodiesel plant produces over 9.5 million gallons using animal fat, vegetable oil and greases. They have been in operation since 2006. The funding is expected to save six jobs.
USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, administers and manages housing, business and community infrastructure and facility programs through a national network of state and local offices. Rural Development has an existing portfolio of more than $155 billion in loans and loan guarantees. These programs are designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America.
