Farm News: Could Be A Record Corn Year For WI

Based on conditions as of November 1, Wisconsin could be on the verge of a record breaking corn crop!

State officials say they predict that the average corn field around the state has yielded about 160 bushels per acre. If all that crop is harvested – it would be a record high in overall production at 525 million bushel. That’s a 2.5 percent increase over last year.

Despite those impressive numbers – the actual yield itself is behind the 2010 record breaker. What is impressive about this year’s corn crop – the ear count. State officials say the actual number of ears of corn on each stalk was at a new high - averaging 28,950 ears per acre this year, 650 more than last
year.

What about soybeans? Well state officials say that crop came in above average too.

Wisconsin’s November 1 forecast for soybeans is 47.0 bushels
per acre, up two bushels from last month but still 3.5 bushels lower than 2010. If realized, it would still put Wisconsin in the number two spot nationwide – just behind Iowa and their 50.5 bushel to the acre yields.

The major soybean-producing states indicates a lower pod count compared with last year
The Wisconsin potato crop is expected to yield 360 hundredweight (cwt.) per acre, 35 hundredweight below last year.  Area harvested is up 500 acres, from 61.5 thousand acres in 2010 to 62.0 thousand acres in 2011. Production is forecast at 22.3 million cwt., down 8.1 percent from a year ago.
