More women will be heading out to fields and woods Saturday when the gun deer hunting season opens in Wisconsin.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the number of females registered to hunt has grown steadily over the last several years. About 53,000 women were registered to hunt in 2010, compared to about 46,000 in 2003.

DNR hunt coordinator Keith Warnke says the things that motivate hunters are family, friends and fun. And when wives, daughters or girlfriends participate it involves more of the family.

Warnke tells the Appleton Post-Crescent (http://post.cr/u67DRn ) that while the number of female hunters is increasing, there's a general decline in the number of hunters overall.

About 15,000 fewer hunters bought licenses last year compared to 2009.
