Farm News: State Tops Honors At Vegas Fair ConventioncommentsPosted: 12.18.2011 The Wisconsin Association of Fairs were well represented at the recent International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) 121st Annual Convention held in Las Vegas, NV November 27-December 1, 2011. More than 20 of Wisconsin’s fairs were represented at the convention, participating in workshops, round tables, Fair Institute Courses, attending the trade show and networking with fellow fair members and Associates.
In addition, Wisconsin fair members received some prestigious awards. Jessica Klumpp from the Florence County Fair and George Stanchfield from the Fond Du Lac County Fair were two of the five recipients of the Heritage Awards sponsored by Haas & Wilkerson Insurance. The awards recognize the achievements of outstanding volunteer fair managers. Each winner received a plaque and $1,000, and each fair nominating the winners received $500. The nominees were required to have at least 10 years of fair management experience and could receive no more than $2,500 remuneration annually for serving in the position. The nominees’ fairs were also required to be current members of IAFE. Past winners of this award from Wisconsin include Joel Franke, Elroy Fair; Ed Sokolowski, Walworth County Fair; Ron Meyer, Central WI State Fair; and Victoria Harter, Oconto County Fair.
Mary Maas, Monroe County Fair; Rusty Volk, Northern WI State Fair; and Jayme Buttke, WI Association of Fairs were recognized as graduates of the “Institute of Fair Management”. Launched in 2007, The Institute consists of a series of 32 short courses covering the areas of core competency necessary for today’s professional and volunteers involved in the production of their agricultural fair. Courses cover management, risk management, marketing, programming, operations and year-round facility usage. The courses are offered in a variety of settings – as part of IAFE meetings, via webinars, and in an annual enrollees-only event called The Summit – in a 2 year, repeating cycle. 27 graduates were honored at the IAFE Convention in Las Vegas, NV on November 30, 2011. Currently, there are over 180 individuals enrolled in the Institute of Fair Management from across the US and Canada.
Jessica Klumpp, Florence County Fair received the Bob Williams Scholarship for the Institute of Fair Management. Kristi Chuckel, WI State Fair; Shari Black, Waukesha County Fair; Jayme Buttke, WI Association of Fairs; and Jessica Klumpp, Florence County Fair; each received a $500 Errol McCoy Scholarship for the program as well.
The Brown County Fair was the winner of the John Deere Gator. Each fair attending the convention had their fair’s name put into the drawing. Ron VanDyck from the Brown County Fair accepted the gator on behalf of his fair.
Jayme Buttke was elected President of the Federation of Fairs and Provincial Associations Board for a two-year term. While serving this role, she will be a member of the IAFE Board of Directors.
Wisconsin was also well represented in the awards categories for the IAFE Agricultural Awards Program sponsored by John Deere, the IAFE Competitive Exhibits Awards Program sponsored by North American Midway Entertainment, and the IAFE Hall of Honor Communications Awards sponsored by K & K Insurance. Wisconsin State Fair, Walworth County Fair, Brown County Fair and Jefferson County Fair either won or were in the top three for numerous award categories.
The International Association of Fairs and Expositions is headquartered in Springfield, Missouri and serves the interest of agricultural fairs (county fair, state fairs, and regional fairs) across the globe.
