Farm News: Fair Honors Flow In WI DellscommentsPosted: 01.12.2012 More then 1,100 people were in attendance at the 2012 Wisconsin Fair Association Convention in Wisconsin Dells. Wednesday evening - they recognized industry leaders and volunteers. Jayme Buttke, executive director of the Wisconsin Fair Association said that these recipients are true testiments to dedication of the fair philosophy. Buttke says all of the honorees willing share ideas and resources with one another and fellow fair board members - and have helped Wisconsin be a national leader in fair activities. V.I.P Award:
Awarded to non-fair board member/non-committee member, no specific length of service required
District #1
The V.I.P Award is presented to Sharon Larsen of Waupaca County Fair. Larsen has been volunteering for the Waupaca County fair for the last 25 years. She started helping her husband Russ with the beverage stand, but after Russ became a Fair Board member in 1991, Larson assumed all responsibility of the stand. She also helps plan and coordinate the Fairest of the Fair competition, the menu preparation and serving the meal for the Fairest Contestants, parents, guests, and Fair Board members. Larson is also involved with the food preparation for the hospitality room hosted by the Waupaca County Fair here at State Convention. So basically if there is food on your plate, you can assume it’s going to be good since Larson had her hand in it.
District #2
The V.I.P Award is presented to Sally Kjorlien of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. For the last 33 years Kjorlien has been committed to the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. Currently she is the fair secretary and in charge of everything from vendors, to entertainers, to guests of the fair. During the fair, Kjorlien uses her 30 year relationship with the vendors and superintendents to make everything run smoothly and can always find volunteers to fill in when things get a little rough. Kjorlien is a key employee of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. She stepped up to ensure a smooth transition during the shift in ownership and also played a critical part of the re-development of the Fairest of the Fair program. Because of her dedication to the industry the Northern Wisconsin State Fair is growing and planning for the future.
District #3
The V.I.P Award is presented to Janet Nichols of the Grant County Fair. Since 2003, Nichols has been working diligently to ensure the fair can run as smooth as possible. Before the fair she makes sure the fair book is updated correctly, enters in all FFA members as well as 4-H members. During entry days, Nichols also takes on the task of entering the 5,176 exhibitors, and afterwards she helps get the ribbons in order for each department. During the fair, Nichols is always there to answer the numerous phone calls that come in and help wherever needed. Nichols is a great asset to the Grant County Fair.
District #4
The V.I.P Award is presented to Norman Loehr of the Fond du Lac County Fair. Loehr dedicated himself to the fair for the last 66 years when he first joined 4-H. To anyone at the Fond du Lac County Fair, you can’t spell swine without Norm. Loehr has made the swine project what it is today. Without his expertise and knowledge it would not be as successful. Loehr is also instrumental in organizing the annual Market Livestock Reception. Loehr is always there with a smile on his face to answer questions or greet people. He is such a great leader and role model for the youth that he is beyond irreplaceable to the Fond du Lac County Fair.
Outstanding Fair Person:
Awarded to fair board/county fair committee member being active 12 years or less
District #1
The Outstanding Fair Person Award is presented to Shelly Tripp of the Florence County Fair. For the last six plus years, Tripp held many positions and served on every committee imaginable. During the fair, Tripp works on everything from opening the exhibit building to organizing a food service crew to running raffles. She is always willing to jump in and help wherever needed. Tripp goes above and beyond her fair board member duties to encourage the community to attend the fair, support the fair and become active in planning the fair. After the “bad weather” fair in 2009, Tripp took it upon herself to single-handedly organize a raffle to raise money in order to recoup the loss. Not only was she able to make up the financial loss, Tripp and her husband also donated the top prize. She is the model of an outstanding community member and Florence County Fair is grateful she supports them.
District #2
The Outstanding Fair Person Award is presented to Rod McGee of Polk County Fair. McGee served on the fair board for the last 11 years, but has been in love with the fair since he was little. Being the Grandstand Superintendent, McGee is very dedicated to all his responsibilities. Before the fair he mows the 60 acre parking lot, grades the pulling track, and fences in the Beer Garden. During the fair he is in charge of running all the horse, garden tractor, truck and tractor pulls. If that wasn’t enough to take on during fair week, McGee also is the go-to-guy to solve problems that arise. After the fair he is constantly using his skill with heavy machinery and access to equipment to make improvements to the fair grounds, as well as promoting the truck and tractor pulls. McGee is truly a positive influence to that program and the Polk County Fair.
District #3
The Outstanding Fair Person Award is presented to Robert Kenney of the Grant County Fair. Kenney started his fair journey when he was an exhibitor as a child. Now he has served as a fair member for the last 8 years and is devoted to making the Grant County Fair as great as it can be. During the fair, Kenney is responsible for overseeing the livestock barns, organizing and running the truck and tractor pull, and attending meetings to help solve problems that arise. After the fair, Kenney goes above and beyond to donate his equipment and time to help fix and build things needed for the fair to be a safer place. Kenney was very instrumental in making plans and financing for the building of the new exhibit hall. Without the love and support from Kenney, the Grant Country Fair could not be what it is today.
District #4
The Outstanding Fair Person Award is presented to David Salkowski of the Ozaukee County Fair. For the last 8 years Salkowski has served as director for the Fair. He currently has three major positions: Treasurer, Grounds Crew Manager, and Chairman of the Beer and Food Committee. During the fair, he works very hard ensuring all money and receipts are correct, putting up bleachers, stages and fencing, as well as keeping accurate inventory and addressing any problems with the beer and food. Salkowski is a tremendous asset to the Ozaukee County Fair. If there is any job to do, just ask Salkowski and he will do it.
Hall of Fame Award:
Awarded to fair board/county fair committee member active more than 12 years
District #1
The Hall of Fame Award is presented to Gary Beastrom of the Athens Fair. After 44 years of service to the fair, what isn’t there to say about Beastrom. Before the fair he works on preparing and distributing the fair book, ordering awards, preparing contracts for commercial exhibitors and groups with the food and beverage stands, as well as determining the layout of the 4-H and FFA chapter booths. During the fair he is the Bob Barker of events. Beastrom is the emcee for the Queen Coronation, Superintendent of the Dairy show, clerk of the Draft Horse shows, announces the Fair Parade, and is the emcee for the Sunday night awards program. One of the main reasons there is still a fair in Athens is because of Beastrom. It is because of his hard work and dedication to the exhibitors and community that the Athens Fair can be successful every year.
District #2
The Hall of Fame Award is presented to Gayle Sullwold of the St. Croix County Fair. For over 25 years Sullwold has committed her life to improving and promoting the St. Croix County Fair, and now her five generation family is following in her footsteps. Currently acting as the fair board secretary, Sullwold spends countless hours preparing for the fair. She does everything from organizing the premium book, to scheduling entertainment, to coming up with new ideas for the displays. During the fair Sullwold takes on the task of running the fair office smoothly and efficiently, and with her organizational skills, she makes it looks like a breeze. If St. Croix County Fair had to pick a face to put on their fair, it would be Sullwold’s. Sullwold has not only shaped the St. Croix County Fair but she has made all the members involved with the fair better people.
District #3
The Hall of Fame Awards is presented to Joel Franke of Elroy Fair. Since 1994 Franke has served on the fair boards but since childhood, Frane has been actively involved in the fair. He is the leading force in putting the Elroy Fair together each year, and that starts with securing sponsorship. Franke spends a great deal of time searching potential sponsorships and maintaining relationships with the existing ones. During the fair Franke is involved with many things. One of his biggest jobs is the changeover of the entertainment area. This means Franke works late at night ensuring the grounds are set up accordingly. Since the fair is located at the city park, the park needs to be restored to its original condition after the fair. Franke is always there the Monday after, working extremely hard to restore everything. Franke is an icon at the Elroy fair. Without him the fair could not be what it is today, and everyone there is blessed to know him.
District #4
The Hall of Fame Award is presented to Jim Schoenike of the Dodge County Fair. Being on the fair board for over 30 years has created an enormous amount of knowledge for Schoenike, to which everyone turns for advice, questions, or concerns. Schoenike currently serves as the President and has done so for the last 20 years. Before the fair he takes care of the advertising and assists in running the Press Banquet. During the fair he is the “touble-shooting” guy. No matter the problem, Schoenike will be there to fix it. He goes above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis, and is constantly looking out for what is best for the fair. Dodge County Fair is proud to have Schoenike serve on their board and could not ask for anyone better.
