Farm News: Raw Milk Fight Continues

A farmer who sells unpasteurized milk appeared in Sauk County Circuit Court on charges of failing to get licenses to operate his dairy business.

The Department of Agriculture has been trying to stop Vernon Hershberger from selling raw milk, but the Loganville farmer has continued to operate his business. Hershberger represented himself in court when he made an initial appearance on four
misdemeanor charges.

He argued that no license exists that would allow him to sell raw milk, that's why he doesn't have one. Supporters say pasteurization, which kills harmful bacteria and
extends shelf life, depletes the milk of beneficial nutrients and enzymes.

Opponents say the threat of food-borne illnesses such as E. coli or salmonella should take precedent. WISC-TV says Hershberger is due back in court Jan. 30.
