Farm News: New Extension Team Helps Pork ProducerscommentsPosted: 01.06.2010 The newly formed UW-Extension Swine Team will be offering a number of Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA Plus®) training sessions statewide in January and February. The Swine Team will be working with their UW-Extension Ag Agent colleagues to offer the training sessions in larger geographic areas to reach more producers who need to be certified and/or recertified in the PQA Plus® program. PQA Plus is an education and certification program for pork producers. PQA Plus content incorporates animal care and well-being principles and judicious antimicrobial use guidelines to the pork industry food safety and residue avoidance practices established in earlier versions of the PQA program. Pork producers can receive PQA Plus certification by attending a training session like those scheduled over the next few weeks. PQA Plus-certified pork producers can receive PQA Plus site status for their production operations by having an advisor conduct an on-farm assessment of animal care practices on their farms.
Interested pork producers are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming PQA Plus® training sessions:
January 20 – 1 PM – UW Richland Center, Richland Center
January 21 – 1 PM – Youth and Ag Center, Lancaster
January 27 – 1 PM – First Banking Center, Darlington
January 29 – 1:30 PM – Kalahari Resort, Wisconsin Dells
February 9 – 6:30 PM – Hancock Ag Research Station, Hancock
Contact the WPA or any swine team member for more information on these training sessions.

PQA Plus individual certification and site status will be required by some packers soon, including Hormel and Tyson. Producers are encouraged to contact their packer to confirm any requirements. WPA recently announced a $75 rebate to assist pork producers in attaining site status on their operations.
