Was it weather influenced - or a decrease in grower interest - that shrunk Wisconsin's strawberry acres in 2011?

Wisconsin strawberry production totaled 40,000 hundred-weight (cwt.) in 2011, down from 41,000 cwt. in 2010. Farmers in the state harvested 700 acres, down from 710 acres last year. Average yield per acre, at 57 cwt., was down from 58 cwt. in 2010.

The overall average price per pound rose to $1.61 from $1.57 last year. Pick-your-own strawberries aver-aged $1.32 per pound, while pre-picked strawberries averaged $2.15 per pound.

Nationally, 57,470 acres of strawber-ries were harvested for a total production of 28.9 million cwt., with an average yield per acre of 504 cwt. The average U.S. price per pound was $0.83. California had the highest yield per acre, at 680 cwt., and New York had the highest overall average price per pound, at $2.35.
