Posted: 01.21.2010

The Buy Local Buy Wisconsin Workshop Roadshow will host workshops titled "Food Safety on the Market Farm" at three locations in February.

The workshops will be in East Troy, Wednesday, Feb. 10; Montello, Thursday, Feb. 11; and La Farge, Friday, Feb. 12.

Fresh fruit and vegetable growers can get practical information and useful tips to help ensure the safety and quality of produce taken to market in this day-long workshop. Attending this workshop will provide tools necessary to navigate state and federal food safety programs and regulations, such as the GAP/GHP program at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Workshop moderator John Hendrickson is an outreach specialist with the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems at University of Wisconsin-Madison and an organic vegetable grower. He coordinates the Wisconsin School for Beginning Vegetable Growers and is involved in research and educational programs for organic and sustainable growers throughout Wisconsin. He will be joined by Sam Beattie, food safety specialist with Iowa State University; Rufus Haucke, vegetable grower and marketer at Keewaydin Farms near Viola; and Tim Leege, program manager with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

The cost to attend this workshop will be $20 per person. This includes all workshop materials, lunch, and refreshments.

In addition, this workshop will also be offered as a part of the 12th Annual Value Added Agriculture Conference on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Eau Claire (details and registration price will vary).

Learn more and register online here. Information and registration materials are also available by contacting Kenny Monroe, phone 608-224-5112.

Additional Buy Local Buy Wisconsin workshops will be offered Jan. 20, including Quickbooks 101 for Farmers, Making Decisions about Local Food Sales Opportunities using the Holistic Management Framework, and Post-Harvest Handling for Vegetable Production Quality and Success.
