Farm News: Food Summit Back In Viroqua

The Second Annual Food, Fuel and Future Summit will be held Wednesday, February 17th at the Firehouse, Viroqua. The conference is sponsored by CAFÉ-Citizens for Agriculture and Friends of the Environment as a collaborative effort, bringing farmers, landowners, sportsmen, businesses and friends working together to preserve our agricultural economy, our environment and our way of life. Nationally known speakers will share the program from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. More than 100 people attended last year’s first annual conference.

 
The speakers and topics for the morning program include: Carl Babler, Senior Hedge Specialist for First Capitol Ag., Galena, IL, “Managing Risk Without Government Influence”, Matt Wilde, Award Winning Agriculture & Business Writer for the Courier in Waterloo, IA, “What Really Happens When a Hog CAFO is Built in Your Community,” and Dr. David Drake, an Extension Wildlife Specialist and Associate Professor in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, UW-Madison, “The Role of Wildlife on the Farm and the Important Role Farmers Play.” Following lunch, you will hear from Dennis Frame, Co-Director of Discovery Farms, “The Practical Science Teachings of Runoff From All Types of Land.”, and the conference will close with a panel of three young farmers, “Why They Choose the Business of Farming,” with panel members, Stacy Mlsna, Jason Pedretti and Corey Leis, all Vernon County young farmers.
