Farm News: House Of Cheese Shuttered - For NowcommentsPosted: 02.03.2010 The House of Cheese web site and madison.com are reporting that a cheese hub on state street has closed its doors - at least temporarilly. The state street store - just across from the state capitol, had been selling Wisconsin cheese and products since 1933. The closing was announced on the store’s website, www.houseofwisconsincheese.com. The site also said the store’s mail order sales have been suspended “while we pause, regroup, and plan for the future.” There is a "for-lease" sign in the window now. The business began in 1933, when Tony Yager took over the meat market at 101 N. Hamilton St., expanded the cheese selection and called it Tony’s House of Wisconsin Cheese. Jim and Marcie Peschel took over the business in the 1960s, followed by their son Mike. Mike Peschel moved the store to State Street in 1989, and Jeff Price, the current owner who decided to close, took over the business in 1995. |
