A media conference scheduled for later this week will draw even more attention to the growing need for skilled labor in the "green energy" employment sector.

According to the Apollo Alliance and the Center on Wisconsin Strategy, a new report titled "Mapping Green Career Pathways:  Job Training Opportunities and Infrastructure in Wisconsin" points directly at "green collar" jobs for growth.

The report maps out the elements of green career pathways and identifies training opportunities in Wisconsin that prepare workers for green-collar jobs in construction and manufacturing, sectors that have been in decline over the past decade and particularly hard-hit by the recession. However, as the pace of public and private investments in clean energy quicken, the number of green-collar jobs available to trained Wisconsin residents will continue to multiply.

Wisconsin lost 176,700 jobs between December 2007 and December 2009, including more than 63,000 manufacturing jobs and nearly 25,000 in the construction sector. Efforts to build a clean energy economy in Wisconsin promise to reverse that trend.

Mapping Green Career Pathways identifies training opportunities in Wisconsin that prepare workers for green-collar jobs in the construction and manufacturing sectors, and that represent key elements of an integrated green workforce development system. The report highlights existing programs that are beginning to tie these elements together and provides policy recommendations on how to continue the challenging, but critical, work of building and strengthening green career pathways.

The conference update this week will include:
Elena Foshay, research associate and report co-author, Apollo Alliance
Rhandi Berth, associate director, Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership
JoAnna Richard, deputy secretary, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development
Conor Smyth, policy advisor, Wisconsin Technical College System
Sarah White, senior associate, Center on Wisconsin Strategy
