Farm News: Food Processing Investment Credit ProposalcommentsPosted: 02.12.2010 Wisconsin is home to over 2,000 food processing facilities and warehouses. Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois remain the nation's largest concentrated producer of canned and frozen vegetables. Wisconsin is also the nation's leading producer of cranberries and snap peas as well as carrots, sweet corn, green peas and potatoes. Representative Amy Sue Vruwink and Representative Steve Hilgenberg have proposed a food processing investment credit modeled after the one meat processors have. This tax credit could help food processing companies modernize, save energy, and create jobs. Investments in facilities to process and distribute food will help major buyers such as schools, hospitals and restaurants serve more local food and it will create needed jobs for Wisconsin families. This legislation will provide a refundable food processing and distribution tax credit to 10% of modernization or expansion costs for Wisconsin food processors and distributors. It would include a maximum of $200,000 per facility with total claims paid on a pro rate basis up to $600,000 in the first year of implementation and $700,000 in year two and thereafter. These tax credits will help these companies invest in new technologies, expand their operations and increase efficiencies. |
