One of the foundations of the 99 year old Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association is youth - and Saturday there was no lack of youth present with a positive outlook on the future.

A strong field of young animal agriculture enthusiasts were considered for the 2010 Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association "Master Stockman" scholarships - but only six got the cash.

Saturday during the 99th annual spring awards banquet - they were introduced.

Picking up three $750 scholarships were:

Master Stockman in Beef - Bailey Quam of Lodi.  Quam is the daughter of Terry and Ardell Quam of Lodi. She's currently a sophomore at UW-Madison majoring in Life Science Communications and Animal Sciences.  Quam currently has compiled her own herd of about 74 angus cattle on her families farm. She's been active showing on the state and national scene.

Master Stockman in Swine - went to Samantha Becker of Eleva.  Samantha's the daughter of Wayne and Betty Becker.  She's a student at UW-River Falls engaged in agriculture education and agri-business.  She's been connected with the WLBA show circuit for the past seven years, and also shows extensively at the Eau Claire county fair.

Master Stockman in Sheep - was presented to John Jones of Rio.  Son of John and Amy Jones.  Young Jones is currently a freshman at Kansas State pursuing a degree in Animal Science.  Jones has been a national leader for the Southdown sheep breed - acting as a national ambassador for the breed.  He's also been heavily involved in the National 4-H meats and skillathon teams on the competitive scene.

Three runners-up's were also presented with $500 scholarships.  They included:
Jordan Alf of Edgerton
Ty Bayer of RIngle and
Matt Colle of Luxemburg

The 2010 Skillathon winners were also recognized.

Top Junior Overall Individual and Skillathon awards went to:
Ashley Zimmerman - Marathon County team #1 - top score
Cordt Esser - Grant County - runner up

Best indivdual scores went to Ashley Zimmerman and Sara Glinecki - both of Marathon county.

The Junior Team Overall scores awarded Marathon County the top slot with Grant County as runners-up.

Theresa Bergs from Marathon County - West topped the Senior Overall Individual scores, the top Senior Quiz slot and runner up in Senior Skillathon numbers. That dominance helped Marathon County - West gain the Senior Team Overall, Senior Team Exercise and Senior Team Quiz top spot.

Grant County edged out Marathon County - West in the Senor Team Skill area by their quiz score only.
