Farm News: Don't Buy Ice - Seafood Advice

Investigators across the country have
pulled thousands of seafood packages from grocers' shelves because
the packers were allegedly charging for ice.

Wisconsin consumer officials say they joined with 16 other
states to investigate packers who have been counting the weight of
the ice surrounding the fish on the package's label, driving up the
per-pound cost artificially.

Investigators removed more than 21,000 packages of seafood from
shelves across the country in January and February. Wisconsin
investigators removed 546 packages from 53 locations.

State Weights and Measures Chief Judy Cardin says consumer
officials plan to take enforcement actions that could include civil
forfeitures or criminal charges against 48 packers.

A man who answered the phone at Seafood Doctor, Inc., an
Oregon-based packer named in Wisconsin's investigation, said he
didn't know anything about the probe and hung up.
