Farm News: Don't Forget CRP Agreements This Spring

Spring has arrived and with it comes the sounds of frogs, and birds and other wildlife. Spring also brings the sounds of tractors, mowers and sometimes chainsaws from those maintaining their Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acreage.

Susan Blachowiak from the Dodge County Farm Service Agency (FSA) wants to remind all CRP contract holders that any maintenance required by your conservation plan of operations (CPO) must be performed outside of the primary nesting season which starts May 15and ends August 1. “Review your CPO to find out what type of cover you are supposed to have and to review your maintenance timelines and requirements,” said Blachowiak. “Please note that annual mowing, mowing an entire field, and mowing for cosmetic purposes are prohibited at all times. Any maintenance that needs to be done should be limited to spot spraying or mowing prior to May 15 or after August 1.”

If you have a specific weed problem affecting your approved CRP cover requiring treatment during the primary nesting season, contact your local FSA office in writing before you do anything.  FSA will be able to answer any questions regarding requesting authorization to clip or control weeds during the primary nesting period or in regard to other maintenance that your CRP acreage may require.

Blachowiak noted most CRP acreage has been managed; weeds have been controlled, brush and trees removed when necessary and mowing has been limited to areas needed. However, problems have been found such as fields completely over grown with trees, equipment stored on the fields, as well as areas being mowed for aesthetic reasons only (and often during the nesting season). FSA wants you to be able to enjoy your CRP acres, however remember these acres are under contract.

As a reminder, CRP is considered a crop and must be certified annually by July 15 to authorize the fall payment. CRP participants are reminded to contact their local FSA office now for an appointment to take care of this requirement.

Producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office for additional information in regard to the Conservation Reserve Program. Information on CRP as well as other FSA programs is also available online at www.fsa.usda.gov.
