Farm News: Record Speed On Oat Plantings In WI

With average temperatures 6-7 degrees above normal, it’s not a surprise that Wisconsin farmers tried to use it to their advantage.

The Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service reported on Monday that the state hit a record with the pace it set in oat seedings. As of Sunday, statewide, there were 35 percent of oat acres already seeded. That’s a record! In 2000, growers had managed to plant 31 percent of the oat acres by the same week in April.

Although wet weather limited some fieldwork, overall growers sound very optimistic about the warmer weather, and also how some of their crops came through the winter.

Most growers said both their alfalfa fields and winter wheat fields look good so far, but they also know some low areas might still show signs of winter kill damage. Alfalfa seeding this spring was also underway as weather and field conditions allowed.

When they weren’t planting, land owners were spreading manure, fertilizers, and getting fields ready for corn and soybean planting.
