With spring storm season underway, farmers should consider crop hail insurance as part of their risk management program, especially if they did not enroll in multi-peril crop insurance before the March 15 deadline.

“Each year some farmers in the state are hit by localized storms,” said Tom Thieding Director of Marketing Services. “They just never know when they will come or where they will hit, but chances are very likely a spring or summer storm will hit somewhere.”

For example, one storm front in July did an estimated $8-10 million in crop damage mainly in Grant and Lafayette Counties. Rural Mutual Insurance, the largest insurer of Wisconsin farms in state, paid $2.5 million in crop hail claims from that one storm.

Thieding said over the years, Rural Mutual has paid crop hail claims on everything from apples and cranberries, and field crops like alfalfa, corn and soybeans.

Multi-peril crop insurance covers all risks like frost, drought and also hail damage, with its coverage on the potential yield of each insured unit of a farm. Typically, multi-peril crop insurance covers losses from a longer-term disaster. Farmers had to sign up for multi-peril crop insurance before March 15.

Crop hail insurance, on the other hand, covers the damage from isolated storms to crops on specific acreage that a farmer insures. Farmers can sign up for crop hail insurance throughout the year, but prior to a storm, depending on the insurance company’s policy terms.
