Farm News: Youth Invest In Swine Project AnimalscommentsPosted: 04.16.2010 The Wisconsin Pork Association and Wisconsin Show Pig Association hosted the Eighth Annual Futurity Show and Sale on Saturday, April 10 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Jefferson. Thirty-seven Wisconsin pork producers consigned 99 head of crossbred and purebred barrows and gilts to the sale. The sale average on pigs sold was $190. The top selling animal was a crossbred barrow consigned by Watson Family Farms, Edgerton. The barrow sold for $800 and was purchased by Dessa and Noah Morris, Clinton. Terry Schmaling, Schmaling Auction Service, Delavan, called the sale. To determine sale order, the pigs were judged by breed and sex. Dan Goehring, Lowell, judged the show. Top placing barrow and gilt awards were presented as follows:
Several youth participated in an educational skillathon hosted before the sale, organized by UW-Platteville students Brett Weinkauf and Alesha Davis. Topics included biosecurity, industry facts, identification of breeds and tools used in the industry. Top juniors were: Ben Veum, Aubrey Doherty, Shelby Grinell, Bailey Langrehr, and Bradley Calkins. Top seniors were: Rachel Lukas, Devan Brugger, Sam Piper, Alicia Humphrey, and Kurt Weisensel. Participants received gift certificates to be used for the purchase of animals in the sale.
