Farm News: Farmers Make Great Field ProgresscommentsPosted: 04.27.2010 And it's not just corn and soybean planting that's advancing! The Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service says that the warmer then expected weather is allowing the states valueable cranberry vines to begin budding. Vegetable planting in the central sands area is also moving ahead with pea and potato planting. Hopefully the beautiful blossoms that we're seeing on our apple, cherry and plum trees are an indication of potential fruit set - and ultimately a good crop for 2010. Is frost a concern? State ag officials say most of Wisconsin's planted crops are still not far enough along to be at risk from an overnight frost. In a few days, however, that may not be the case in all areas. In fact concerns over possible frost and cool temperatures are keeping some conservative farmers from planting their fields. Nationwide, 50 percent of the corn crop is already in the ground. In fact in states like Minnesota - growers are so far ahead they've also planted 4 percent of their soybeans. Traditionally farmers plant all their corn first since the crop requires more time and heat to ultimately reach full maturity this fall. What else would you like to know about Wisconsin crops?
