State wildlife officials are seeking public
input on plans to designate parts of the Eau Claire Chain of Lakes
in Bayfield and Douglas counties as critical habitat areas.

The Department of Natural Resources applies the critical habitat
designation to areas agency officials believe must be protected to
preserve water quality, hunting, fishing and natural beauty.
The designation allows the DNR to impose special permit
conditions or deny permits for dredging and construction, including
building piers and docks.

The DNR has set up a public information session and hearing on
the proposal on May 15 in Barnes in Bayfield County. Draft reports
and maps also are available on the agency's Web site.
