State regulators want public comments on a
proposal for a biomass power plant in central Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Electric Power Co. wants to build the 50-megawatt
woody biomass-fired plant in Rothschild. Woody biomass refers to
leftover debris and waste wood from harvesting trees.
The unit would need about 500,000 tons of fuel annually.

The state Public Service Commission has the authority to
approve, deny or modify the plan. Commission officials say their
decision will hinge partly on whether there's enough fuel available
and whether it can be harvested without damaging the environment.

The commission will take comments on its Web site,
http://psc.wi.gov, until June 1. Public hearings are expected later
this year.
