Farm News: Hay Supplies TightcommentsPosted: 05.13.2010
Stocks of all dry hay stored on Wisconsin farms totaled 753,000 tons on May 1, 2010, a 21 percent decrease from the 950,000 tons stored on May 1, 2009. During the period Decem-ber 1, 2009-May 1, 2010, the state’s livestock and dairy pro-ducers fed 2.27 million tons of hay compared to 2.65 million tons during the same period a year earlier. Nationally, all hay stored on farms May 1, 2010, totaled 20.9 million tons, down 5 percent from the previous year. Disap-pearance of hay from December 1, 2009-May 1, 2010, totaled 86.3 million tons, 6 percent less than the disappearance of 81.6 million tons for the same period a year ago. Hay stocks were down in the southern Great Plains, Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Delta, and most Atlantic Coast States. A harsh, snowy winter in many States in these areas caused hay stocks to dwindle as producers were forced to feed more hay due to the lack of available winter pastures. Hay stocks were also lower compared with May 1, 2009 in California, Washing-ton, and Utah. Overall, the greatest percentage declines oc-curred in Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas. |
