Farm News: Farm Bureau Blasts DNR's Relationship With HSUS

Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation President Bill Bruins issued the following statement regarding the Department of Natural Resources’ partnership with the Humane Society of the United States on a series of public service announcements urging people to not touch young wildlife.

“Someone at the Department of Natural Resources did a poor job of scouting when they decided to work with the deceptively-named Humane Society of the United States.

Like other animal rights organizations, the HSUS follows a principle that animals should not be eaten, worn, hunted, fished or owned.

Given that the more and more people are learning that the HSUS only gives a fraction of its multi-million dollar annual budget to actually caring for animals at local shelters, we’re not surprised the HSUS would look for any opportunity it can to align itself with a state agency to legitimize its purpose.

The HSUS has attacked the livestock industries in other states and would like to get a foothold in Wisconsin. Therefore the DNR should not be partnering with them here in America’s Dairyland.

If the DNR needed a partner to fund a $12,000 radio campaign, there are many other wildlife, conservation and legitimate animal welfare organizations that might have donated the funding. Clearly this is a case of being a penny wise but a pound foolish.”
