Farm News: Early Strawberries Are On The Way

In the first of his weekly installments for strawberry pickers, Barneveld area grower, Ed Bures said that self-pickers could be in his patch by next week.

Bures said early season weather problems - including a frost the weekend of May 7th - hasn't done too much damage in his fields.  "Most growers that I've talked with were very proactive in protecting their plants before that cold snap," Bures told Pam Jahnke on her network farm report Wednesday morning.

Bures said that some growers had begun applying water as a means to protect their plants before they went to bed on Friday night - and just kept the water coming.  It seems to have worked!

Bures said despite the early warm weather, the picking schedule is basically right on schedule.  "We had been almost two weeks early - but the cooler weather since has slowed things down again.  At my farm, we're going to start picking right around the time we normally would."

What about being able to extend the season all the way to Father's Day?  Bures feels pretty confident in the varieties his patch features that he'll be able to offer berry lovers a pretty good selection until at least mid-June.

You can listen to Ed Bures live updates each Wednesday morning in the picking season on line at 5:45 a.m. at wtdy.com - or check back here for his comments.
