Farm News: Wolf On Or Off Endangered ListcommentsPosted: 05.21.2010 Wisconsin representatives Kagen, Kind, Petri, Ryan and Sensenbrenner have all signed a letter asking that the gray wolf be delisted from the endangered species list. The letter's been sent to Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ has already made a request to remove the gray wolf from the list of endangered species. The gray wolf has been taken off the list before, but was ordered back on by the court. Data from a survey done in 2007-2008 showed that during that time, while the wolf was de-listed, its population in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota actually went up. The growing gray wolf population prompted the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to ask federal authorities to remove the gray wolf from a list of federal endangered species. The agency asked the U.S. Department of Interior for permission to reclassify the status of the wolf so state authorities would have more flexibility to control the population. |
